What’s The Difference Between A Sauna And Steam Room?

Saunas and steam rooms are both popular forms of heat therapy and relaxation, but they differ in terms of the heat source and the type of heat they provide:

  • Heat source: In a sauna, the heat is typically generated by a heater that heats rocks or other materials, which then radiate dry heat into the room. The temperature in a sauna can reach high levels, usually between 160°F (71°C) and 200°F (93°C). On the other hand, a steam room produces heat by pumping steam into the enclosed space. The temperature in a steam room is lower than a sauna, typically ranging from 100°F (38°C) to 120°F (49°C).

  • Humidity: The most significant difference between saunas and steam rooms is the humidity level. Saunas provide dry heat with minimal humidity, while steam rooms offer high humidity due to the presence of steam. The humidity in a steam room can be as high as 100%, creating a moist and humid environment.

  • Sensation: The sensation of heat also varies between saunas and steam rooms. In a sauna, the dry heat feels intense and can cause you to sweat profusely. The heat in a steam room is more gentle and enveloping due to the high humidity, and the moisture in the air can make breathing feel easier for some individuals.

    • Benefits: Saunas and steam rooms offer similar benefits, such as relaxation, improved circulation, stress relief, and potential detoxification through sweating. However, the high humidity in steam rooms can be beneficial for respiratory conditions, as it can help moisturize and soothe the airways. Saunas, with their dry heat, may provide a more intense sweating experience and potentially aid in muscle relaxation.

When deciding between a sauna and a steam room, personal preference and individual health considerations should be taken into account. Some people may prefer the dry heat of a sauna, while others enjoy the moist environment of a steam room. It's important to listen to your body and choose the option that feels most comfortable and enjoyable for you.
